Purpose: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in district schools.

Qualifications:
  1. Current Kansas Registered Nurse license (Bachelor's Degree)
  2. CPR certified with AED qualifications.
  3. Recommended Kan Be Healthy Certification or School Nurse Certification.
  4. Background in community health, pediatrics, and/or emergency care preferred.
  5. Strongly encourage an education background which includes a BSN.
  6. Demonstrated communication skills.
  7. Must have patience and ability to work with students and other staff.
  8. Possess basic computer skills and ability to use office machines as required.
  9. Desire to continue career improvement.
Supervisor: Lead Nurse/Building Principal

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain confidentiality for all personnel.
  2. Delivers nursing care in accordance with standards of care defined by Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
  3. Evaluates, assess, and cares for injuries, illnesses, and emergencies. Responds to emergency calls anywhere in the district, as needed.
  4. Procures doctor's orders and communicates with doctor's offices when necessary.
  5. Dispenses prescriptions to students in need of medication or treatment and delegates nursing tasks when appropriate.
  6. Audits immunization records of all students and prepares state report. Notifies parents of need to update immunization and keeps those records.
  7. Maintains current health records of all students including appropriate documentation for all staff, parent, and student contacts.
  8. Organize and conduct screening programs and rechecks when indicated, for detection and referral of student health problems. Notify parents of screening results.
  9. Assist in the development and implementation of approved health programs for maintaining the best possible health and wellness of students and staff.
  10. Initiate Care Plan for students with special health needs, incorporating parents and teachers into the plan.
  11. Assists with pre-assessment, development, and IEP implementation for identified students.
  12. Serves as an active member on various committees (such as SBST, Safety Committee, Health Curriculum and Education committees) as requested by administrators and required by student need.
  13. Assists with hospitalization-school transition, and determination of homebound requirements.
  14. Serves as a resource to help teachers understand and present health/medical information, and teaches health class as requested by building principal.
  15. Practice universal precautions and adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  16. Assess students for communicable diseases. Exclude students from school attendance as required by law. Instruct administrators, teachers, and parents in state recommended procedures for communicable disease cases.
  17. Counseling of students on health related issues in coordination with administration and counselor(s). Instruct teachers of classroom impact while maintaining confidentiality.
  18. Refer students with health problems, to appropriate agencies such as physicians and state services. Notify principal of notes, letters and other communication to parents as needed.
  19. Remains current by participating in district in-service programs, school nursing programs, and other appropriate training opportunities.
  20. Make recommendations to administration and the district lead nurse, for amendment and development of district policy to comply with legal requirements.
  21. Assist district personnel and families, by acting as a resource person and liaison, in regard to the health needs of students.
  22. Other duties as assigned by the building principal, administration, or lead nurse.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  1. Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
  2. Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
  3. Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
  4. Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
  5. Some knowledge of the school organization and community served.
  6. Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
  7. Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
  8. Ability to develop positive working relationships
INTERRELATIONS: Heavy contact with staff and students. Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy. Must exhibit a professional manner and maintain a positive attitude with all students and colleagues.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  1. Must occasionally work in a noisy and crowded environment with numerous interruptions.
  2. May be required to wear protective garments and/or gloves for exposure control under limited circumstances.
  3. Must possess the physical strength to occasionally assist in lifting the students, bending and performing CPR.
  4. Ability to move, lift, pull or push heavy objects.
